Why I read what I read

If you look at the Books I Read page on this blog, it is pretty clear that I only read non-fiction. Fiction has no place in my reading list. This is not because I hate fiction but I need to be judicious with my limited time. In fact, earlier this year I thought of completely stop reading even non-fiction and focus on pursuing my goals. But then I realized I need to maintain a balance between motion and action.

I primarily read to learn. And learning is fun. So I propose one can read non-fiction as well for fun.

Reading takes time. So I’d rather invest my time in reading something practical and valuable that maximizes my return on investment rather than reading fictional drama between some funny characters.

Before we part, I encourage you to read this great post on Medium titled How to Read. And then act.

This post is written in response to today’s Daily Prompt (The Great Divide) on WordPress.com

Iterate until done.

It does not matter whether you fail in achieving your dreams. Failure is inevitable especially if you are aiming for something higher. What matters is whether  you are iterating or not. As long as there are continued efforts backed by refined plans,  achieving any dream is eventual.

I am lucky enough to live three major dreams, all achieved in the last 10 years. Every single one was iterated more than few times.

I am currently working on my next dream and I already failed once.  I am unsure how many more times I will fail given its magnitude. But what I am sure about is, I  will never stop iterating.

Tim Cook on privacy at Apple

Read the interesting message from Tim Cook on Apple’s stance on privacy.

I am impressed with the following two paragraphs:

Our business model is very straightforward: We sell great products. We don’t build a profile based on your email content or web browsing habits to sell to advertisers. We don’t “monetize” the information you store on your iPhone or in iCloud. And we don’t read your email or your messages to get information to market to you. Our software and services are designed to make our devices better. Plain and simple.

and

Finally, I want to be absolutely clear that we have never worked with any government agency from any country to create a backdoor in any of our products or services. We have also never allowed access to our servers. And we never will.

Howdy, from New Zealand.

I am Chaitanya, an Indian living in Auckland, New Zealand. We are a happy family. I work for a local technology company for my living. Among few others, WordPress and writing are my passions. This is why I am here 🙂

I started blogging with Blogger in 2006 and eventually reached Mecca of Blogging: WordPress. Most of my posts are on my other self hosted blog.

I am on WordPress.com for a specific reason- to make friends, learn WordPress.com and improve my writing.

Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
I am a perpetual learner. One of the many ways to learn is to take the good from what others are doing. This is why I read blogs. Over the past many years I met interesting people, learned valuable lessons and got some amazing inspiration from ordinary people like me. So my blog is my contribution to the blogging world. Because I hate to be a passive consumer and would like to share my stories with the world.

What topics do you think you’ll write about?
I write about my personal stories, interesting things that I come across my way, inspirational stories about myself and others, learning hacks and anything else I feel like sharing.

Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
Fellow interesting people from across the world.

If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?
Learn more about interesting and inspirational people, improve my writing, become a WordPress.com Pro.

How to run YouTube in the background on iPhone

Finally I figured how to run YouTube in the background on iOS device.

Use Safari -not YouTube app- to access mobile YouTube site. Safari runs in the background so we can still listen to the audio.

YouTube app can’t multitask. So dismiss that suggestion to open the app.

This works on iPad as well.

The Infamous ‘Error establishing a database connection’ Error

Last week I backed up my posts and themes and then deleted my test WordPress.org installation on which I developed and tested my other self hosted blog over the last few months.

I did this partly in order to start afresh with WP 4.0 RC1 beta testing. However I encountered the ‘Error establishing a database connection’ Error that prevented the installation. I could not figure how to resolve this and eventually gave up.

I resumed the installation today and saw this error again! Somehow I felt like trying by adding the actual hostname instead of localhost as the value of the Database Host property.

It worked 🙂
